February 4th Is World Cancer Day

On this day, cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

The number of cancer cases and related deaths is rapidly increasing globally. The term “oncological disease” – “cancer” encompasses over a hundred different pathologies united by common features. One of the characteristic features of cancer is the rapid proliferation of abnormal cells that spread beyond their usual boundaries and are capable of invading surrounding tissues and migrating to other organs, i.e., metastasizing. Widespread metastases are the main cause of death from cancer.

The transformation of normal cells into tumor cells occurs as a result of the interaction between genetic factors and three categories of external factors, which include:

•        Physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation;

•        Chemical carcinogens, such as asbestos, components of tobacco smoke, alcohol, aflatoxins (as harmful additives in food), and arsenic (as a harmful additive in drinking water);

•        Biological carcinogens, such as infections caused by certain viruses, bacteria, or parasites.

The cumulative impact of the above-mentioned risk factors exacerbates the tendencies towards a decrease in the effectiveness of cellular repair mechanisms as a person ages. Therefore, in cancer prevention, it is extremely important to follow the rules of a healthy lifestyle and eliminate harmful habits.

No less important in the fight against this frightening disease is the practice of early cancer diagnosis and screening, as well as treatment and palliative care in case of disease detection.

In Estonia, the Minister of Health and Labor, Tanel Kiik, approved the National Cancer Control Action Plan for 2021-2030. The plan aims to reduce the number of cancer cases and deaths from cancer and improve the quality of life for cancer patients. The comprehensive plan covers all aspects of cancer control: from prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to the postoperative period.
